Just last week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released April's jobs report and as expected, it showed the true economic impact of COVID-19 on the U.S. labor force. The unemployment rate soared to more than 14 percent and almost 21 million Americans lost their jobs last month alone.
As Americans look to the future and start to think about what a post-COVID-19 world will look like, we must make sure every American can maintain and obtain their health coverage. Preserving existing health care coverage and providing opportunities to obtain coverage will be critical to our recovery as we work toward returning to a more normal, daily life.
That means making sure newly uninsured Americans know they have options available to them through our current health care system.
Whether it's through Healthcare.gov, states who have announced special enrollment periods through their state exchanges, through COBRA, or public programs like Medicaid, Americans can get health insurance coverage through any one of several existing programs. Almost 80 percent of Americans who lost their employer-provided coverage are eligible for subsidized coverage through the health care exchanges, and others can qualify for tax credits and other financial assistance as they navigate this critical time.
This pandemic isn't over, but as we look to recover from the economic hardships caused by COVID-19, health coverage shouldn't be something Americans have to worry about.
